The Woodwork Career Alliance of North America was established in 2007 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity to actively promote and develop a skilled workforce for the woodworking industry in the United States and Canada. Ten years later, the WCA has created skill standards for more than 240 woodworking machines and operations; issued more than 1,300 Passports and signed up more than 165 high school and post- secondary woodworking programs as EDUcation™ members.
As a visible sign of its growing influence and acceptance, four states – California, Michigan, North Carolina, and Wisconsin – recognize the WCA’s credentials program for their respective state-sponsored career and technical education programs. In addition, the Woodworking Machinery Industry Association recognized the WCA as its 2016 Educator of the Year.
The student begins their journey with the WCA Saw Blade Certification.
The Saw Blade Certification is 35 tasks involving the following tools and equipment; Square, Combination Square, Digital Calipers, Jointer, Table Saw, Drill Press, Orbital Sander. The certification culminates with a 40 question online test that the student must get an 80% or better to pass. After the student meets the above requirements, the WCA will mail the certificates to the school and the school will award each student their certificate

The student continues onto their WCA Passport.
The Passport is a portable credential for individuals in the woodwork industry to quantify and qualify their ability to operate woodwork tools properly and safely to create high quality wood products. Certificates are not tied to specific occupations or jobs. Rather, the Skill Standards empower employers to select the tools and tool operation levels relevant to their jobs or training needs. A WCA Passport verifies the individual’s tool proficiencies allowing them to “document their skills”. WCA maintains a national database of passport holders and their achievements. Students receive Points through a performance assessment that is fair, defensible, clear, teachable, observable and measurable. A student’s skills and knowledge are assessed by a WCA Accredited Skill Evaluator (the teacher) who observes the student as s/he uses a tool and then inspect the final product, ensuring that the student’s technique and product complies with WCA standards. Skill Evaluator record and submit the evaluation to the WCA electronically and issue the appropriate Points in the Woodwork Passport. |
